LeBron James, the Michael Jordan of today’s era, just started a podcast with JJ Redick called Mind The Game, and what stood out the most to me was when he spoke about Discipline.
“When it comes to discipline, you have to sacrifice loved ones for a long period of time – if you want to be great” he said.
I feel like that’s the common thing between all the great in basketball, business, and many other fields.
This kind of of discipline sounds selfish, and it probably is. But if you have a talent, “Why don’t you squeeze that lemon to the max” he said.
Discipline is waking up every morning at the same hour and doing the best, every day.
Discipline is following a diet, and never painting new excuses in your mind, you follow it.
Discipline in the past was taught inside the family, and then in the military.
Nowadays it’s a loose concept.
It’s very easy to have discipline in what you enjoy doing, it’s very complicated to force yourself when you have to do it regardless – unless it’s your job, and there you truly have no option. You do it because you know that you have to do it.
Why is it so hard to apply the discipline we have when working for others to better our own lives, investing in our bodies, companies, or whatever our dreams and goals may be?
I don’t have a precise answer.
What I am sure of is that I sacrificed my loved ones for my dreams. I am very aware of it. I lost many friends who didn’t understand my obsessions, and all the friends who needed a message every day instead of every few months.
I do believe I’ve accomplished amazing things because of these sacrifices, I’ve seen a huge portion of the world, I’ve experienced things most people won’t in a lifetime! I believe it was worth it!
But I still feel like I need a bit more of discipline to take a full control of my life, and then we’ll all experience greatness!
LeBron James played basketball at the highest level for over 20 years, here with my channel we are just scratching the surface, we aren’t in the NBA yet!
